BINGHAMTON () -- February is Black History Month and all month long, will be highlighting change-makers from in and around the Southern Tier.

This week, we are shining the light on not just one Change-Maker, but an institution that has become the home and gathering place of movers and shakers on the local and national scale.

On the corner of Oak and Lydia street in Binghamton sits Trinity AME Zion Church. It was the first black church in Broome County, but the building seen today is the product of very humble beginnings.

“There are records going back to 1826 as the first gathering, but it was more or less like a mission, ” said Brenda Cave-James, a church member who has done extensive research on its history.

“It was just a group of people near the water, near the Susquehanna River, and it was described as like a shack or shed assisting people, freedom finders and slave people who had left from the south, ” said Cave-James, “Later Joshua Whitney, the great land baron who came and got things started around here, donated some land to the congregation and that was where current day Columbus Park is.”

She said abolitionist Jermain Wesly Loguen, himself a freed slave, served as pastor of the church in Binghamton and others across the Southern Tier as a circuit preacher in the mid 1800′s.

“Our church, in general, has been dubbed the freedom church because we were part of the anti-slavery movement and all the great abolitionists came out of our church, said Cave James, Frederick Douglass, Jermain Wesly Loguen, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and many many more that you don’t hear about.”

“We were on the forefront of everything, the black church was the heart of the community, and our church, in particular, there were several black churches in town, but ours is the oldest, and back in the day it was standing room only.”

She said their church has always pushed for progress and many famed African Americans have spoken within their walls. Cave-James said it was thanks to community leader Fred Hazel that W.E.B Dubois spoke in Binghamton about lynching. The church also hosted James Weldon Johnson who penned ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ often referred to as the black national anthem. Senator John Lynch, one of the first black senators after reconstruction also came and spoke at their church.

For example, Claude Fawcett was a military veteran who also used his culinary skills for eloquent banquets. He was a well-known photographer in the area, capturing the vibrant life and culture of the community for decades.

His wife, Beccye was the first black employee of the Binghamton Public Library and was an ordained minister at Trinity. She also wrote plays and musicals that were performed at the church and in the community. Cave-James said she was even responsible for bringing Ethel Waters here to perform.

The Church was also home to the first meeting of the local chapter of the NAACP. One of the signers was Cave-James’ Grandfather.

“Many of the movers and shakers in the town were at that meeting and signed on and it was very necessary, it was a necessary organization and still is. Our church was always a safe house for civil rights.”

“Say someone is running for office for something, or any significant thing that we need to know about or talk about or meet about, our church has been the center of civil rights and progress.”Re-enrollment is an annual data collection process that schools use to update enrollment records of the current student body. The information is used as the school makes plans for the upcoming school year.

Change

The CCA administrative team engages in a tremendous amount of planning to ensure that we are prepared to fulfill our mission of providing quality Christian education every year. Until CCA families confirm their intention to enroll for the upcoming year, we cannot make solid plans for staffing, programs, materials, curriculum, and facility usage. We take the stewardship of tuition dollars very seriously, and we want to invest tuition revenue wisely so that we can provide the best programs possible for our students.

Job: A 12 Week Study

I have no plans to change schools and almost everybody comes back every year anyway. Can’t I just stay at CCA until I notify the school otherwise?

Until now, re-enrollment has been an “opt-in” program. We annually ask every family, “Are you coming back?” In a sense, we have been penalizing the vast majority of families by forcing everyone to go through the re-enrollment process every year. Last year, we retained 94% of our student body. So, EVERYONE had to go through re-enrollment for the sake of the 6% that, for one reason or another, left our school community.

By signing your Continuous Enrollment contract, you will be flipping that script. Rather than an opt-in annual re-enrollment process, CCA’s annual re-enrollment will become an OPT-OUT process. In other words, if you are coming back after signing your Continuous Enrollment Contract, you will never have to worry about re-enrollment again!

After the implementation of the CCA Continuous Enrollment Program, the typical re-enrollment season (December and January) will simply be a communication reminder from the CCA office informing families that might be thinking about leaving our school to notify us prior to the end of January. If last year is any indication, this means that 90+% of CCA families will have the convenience of ignoring this message and doing absolutely nothing!

Families that notify CCA prior to January 31st may withdraw for the upcoming school year without penalty. CCA families that are re-enrolled but cancel the Continuous Enrollment contract by dis-enrolling their student(s) after January 31st will be contractually obligated to pay an un-enrollment fee equal to 1 month of tuition.

Tuition,

But what about unique circumstances? OR I’m planning on keeping my kids at CCA through graduation. What if God has other plans for my family?

We have built flexibility into the Continuous Enrollment Contract. So, for major life changes/unique circumstances like moving 25+ miles away from our school, CCA can no longer meet your child’s educational needs, if the school asks your family to leave, or if there is some unforeseen circumstance that our Administrative Team approves, there will be no financial penalty.
