Millburn School District officials have offered apologies for a botched transportation situation during the first week of school, which was referred to by one parent as “busmageddon.”
Parents speaking to the Board of Education on Mondayreported some students were dropped off at the wrong locations, some students spending up to two hours on buses for transport within Millburn, and youngsters dropped off without adults waiting for them.
Schools Superintendent Christine Burton said the district has brought in a consultant to address the situation and has mapped new bus routes, which it intends to implementnext week, giving busdrivers some time to familiarize themselves with the new routes.

“An additional bus route was added to Washington School, ” said Burton, referring to the district’s new fifth-grade school. “And portions of other routes were deleted and combined to make them safer and more efficient.”
As districtofficials respond to the “many calls and emails” received in regard to the busing situation, she said, the district willconduct a third-party investigation into the transportation problems.
In addressing the issue, the school board has hiredKathleen McGowan, the district’s former transportation supervisor, at a cost of $300 per day retroactive to Sept. 7 and running through Sept. 25. McGowan had retired from the district in 2016.

In the district’s first weeks with the new bus company during the previousschool year, Millburn saw a number of problems, which it sought to remedy with the addition of two-way radios and GPS devices.
Parents at Monday’s school board meeting said that with the addition of the new fifth-grade school, the buses got off to an even worse start than last year.
“Systematically, something has to change, ” said Katherine Dorum, the parent of children attending Hartshorn School and Washington School. “I don’t know that I’m not going to be very impressed to hear that one particular person is let go because of this catastrophe.”

Cari Strassberg, the parent of two students attending Millburn High School, chided the bus company and district for having its drivers rely on directions written on sheets of paper, instead of GPS.
“It just doesn’t make any sense for the bus drivers to have rolled up pieces of paper that they’re trying to read while they’re driving, ” Strassberg said. “I’d like to get a little clarification on that.”
As the busing confusion unfolded during the first week of school, Board of Education President Emily Jaffe was among the local parents recruited to chaperone on school buses and help the drivers navigate the town.

“This problem has been here as a community, it seems, forever, ” Jaffe said. Districtofficials have said the winding country roads with tight turns in parts of Millburncan make navigating a school bus difficult.
Parents fear the problems will resurface, something thatprompted resident Louie Shen to ask that improving transportation be placed on the annual district and board goals, which were also discussed Monday evening.
“Some of the constant problems like transportation should be added onto that checklist, and you should take a more proactive approach, ” Shen said.

While still calling the transportation situation a “debacle, ” Jaffe also pointed to positives, including the first week of thenew fifth-grade school in Millburn.
Strassbergmaintained that once the new routes are put into place, the district may see an increase in the number of students taking school buses.
